Translator, We need you!

Dear Jack who built the house,

You have helped us in previous years with translations and for that we are most grateful. Now we turn towards the 2011/12 fundraiser. It may seem forever away, but work has already begun getting everything ready to go. This year we want to have landing pages covering as many countries in as many languages as possible.

Right now, we want to figure out who is interested in translating for the fundraiser. This year we're hoping to have more of a solidified "core" group of translators that we can count on to have work done by a few key dates, but we'd also welcome help from people who are willing to just help out when they can.

Tech ambassadors, "take two"

Hello tech ambassador! This month has seen a good influx of new faces in this crew \o/ , so it is time to reactivate our conversations. Now that we have a pretty good coverage of so many different projects, here are some topics for your consideration.

Request for help from Subbu (Parsing Team)

Hi there, ambassador! Subbu and his team would like to encourage a few big wikis to make a planned technical change slightly ahead of time, like the German and the Italian Wikipedia plus 170 other wikis already did last month. He'd appreciate if his message could be translated, before he posts it on the local village pump. (Once he does so, it would of course also be nice if you could keep an eye on the thread, should a conversation happen locally that requires his intervention and/or make sure that the message reaches the right people, but it's not a big deal if you can't!) He'll likely post there on Monday 15, and he'll just use the English version if a translation isn't available. Getting started on Phabricator

Greetings, ambassador!

As recently discussed within this group, we are ready to experiment with setting up a project and its related workboard on Phabricator, the platform used in the Wikimedia movement for project management, software bug reporting and feature requests. It will help us coordinate and cooperate better on projects that should require ambassadors' involvement.

For the time being, I'm just asking that you please add your Phabricator nickname next to your name in the ambassadors' table (you can create an account now if you don't have one already). New Tech Ambassadors Phabricator board

Hello!

We have recently set up a board on Phabricator so that you can learn about tasks and updates that are potentially interesting for your community, and take action when necessary. During the pilot phase we are currently in, to avoid confusion, only Wikimedia Foundation's Community Liaisons will mark tasks so that they end up in the various columns. Thanks for your understanding!

Please follow this Phabricator board (learn how to). You'll receive "notifications" for updates in all tasks listed there. In case you choose to receive them as email; we currently expect the volume to be fairly low, but in any case you can learn how to manage it.

Community Wishlist Survey 2021: Invitation

The 2021 Community Wishlist Survey is now open! This survey is the process where communities decide what the Community Tech team should work on over the next year. We encourage everyone to submit proposals until the deadline on 30 November, or comment on other proposals to help make them better. The communities will vote on the proposals between 8 December and 21 December.

The Community Tech team is focused on tools for experienced Wikimedia editors. You can write proposals in any language, and we will translate them for you. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing your proposals!

Community Wishlist Survey 2021

We invite all registered users to vote on the 2021 Community Wishlist Survey. You can vote from now until 21 December for as many different wishes as you want.

In the Survey, wishes for new and improved tools for experienced editors are collected. After the voting, we will do our best to grant your wishes. We will start with the most popular ones.

We, the Community Tech, are one of the Wikimedia Foundation teams. We create and improve editing and wiki moderation tools. What we work on is decided based on results of the Community Wishlist Survey. Once a year, you can submit wishes. After two weeks, you can vote on the ones that you're most interested in. Next, we choose wishes from the survey to work on. Some of the wishes may be granted by volunteer developers or other teams.

Reference tooltips on la:wiki

Hi Jack. UV (see la:Disputatio Usoris:UV#Something different) points out to me that you worked on reference tooltips, which is currently available (but not enabled by default) on la:wiki. I think we should enable it by default, but first there's an improvement that you might be able to make for us if you're willing. To make internal links possible without using ref templates, we put an internal link like this in the text or more often in a footnote '[[#Jones (2012)]] p. 22', which takes the reader to a span id <span id="Jones (2012)"></span> at the beginning of a line of bibliography or external links. The question is, could the relevant line in bibliography or external links section be highlighted when the cursor hovers over the internal link? -- in the same way that a footnote is highlighted when the cursor hovers over a footnote number. (The hash is intentionally left visible to suggest to the reader that it's a hotlink.)

What do you think? If making this work properly would require some adjustment to our formatting as I've described it, potentially we could manage the adjustment with a bot. Andrew Dalby (talk) 10:04, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

Currently hash links require a CITEREF prefix for references to be displayed in a tooltip. A structure like this:

[[#CITEREFJones (2012)|Jones (2012)]]
...
<span id="CITEREFJones_(2012)">Reference</span>

will work. The CITEREF prefix is specified on this line. You could try to remove that prefix altogether from the code of the gadget, but I'm not sure that would work fine, without side effects, etc. Instead, it might be necessary to add this prefix to the links and ids of <span>...</span> tags.
